Photo stephen_matera // Fog rolling through a subalpine forest at sunset, Mt. Rainier. Often in late summer, a layer of low clouds will push inland from the coast and press up against the lower Cascades. I was fortunate to be in the right place when these clouds formed in the Spray Park part of Mt. Rainier National Park at sunset. Video by bertiegregory. A scorpion fish closeup at night in the Red Sea. Their incredible camouflage can make these fish tough to find. Often you'll be right next to one before realising it's there. Their upturned mouths mean they generally look pretty grumpy but closeup, they are mesmerisingly beautiful. Follow at bertiegregory for more wildlife adventures!

How many narwhals can you count in this photograph? When the feeding is good, they pack themselves in incredibly tight into these small openings in the sea ice to catch a quick breath before resuming the feeding frenzy. This was taken from my small ultralight airplane near Baffin Island, Nunavut. With Brian Knutsen, Dexter Koonoo and jedweingarten while on assignment for natgeo. #followme on paulnicklen to see more pictures of narwhals and get a closer look at their long ivory tusks. #nature #whale #whales #beauty #aerial #instagood #photooftheday #explore #adventure #discovery #tbt

Photo by ErikaSkogg from the north end of Santorini, Greece, in the picturesque village of Oia. Perched on the rim of a caldera, Santorini is actually a circular archipelago of five islands in the southernmost part of Greece's Cycladic Islands - remnants of one of the most legendary volcanic explosions in Mediterranean history.

Photo by petekmuller. A view of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya as seen from the air. The Rift is one of East Africa's most remarkable topographic features. What is visible in this region is but a small portion of the greater phenomenon, which technically spans some 6,000 km (3,700 miles) from the Middle East to the African country of Mozambique. It's an awe inspiring natural feature. Follow National Geographic photographer petekmuller for observations and adventures from Kenya and beyond. #Kenya #Africa #RiftValley #nature #environment

Photo by babaktafreshi The World at Night photography After a rainy day, the overcast sky opened up briefly for a great show, right on time during the autumn equinox. Aurora was rather faint and colorless to the eyes but magnificent to the camera with a rainbow of colors. It was dim enough to reveal the Milky Way band next to it in a 20sec exposure. I'm in Vik in southern tip of Iceland now, expecting extreme weather and stormy wind today! A few more nights left of my around Iceland photo workshop. Photo by christian_foto (Christian Rodriguez ) Hanoi water park. Hanoi , the capital of Vietnam, and also its second largest city, is a fascinating blend of East and West, combining traditional Sino-Vietnamese motifs with French flair. It is largely unscathed from the decades of war, and is now going through a building boom, making it a rapidly developing city in Southeast Asia. #hanoi #asia #vietnam #waterpark Photo by christian_foto

📸 johnkernickphotography The view from Cap de Formentor which forms the eastern end of Majorca's Formentor peninsula. The Majorcans also call the cape the Meeting point of the winds. It's a spectacular place and has many bays, including Cala Fiquera, Cala Murta and Cala Pi de la Posada. The 13.5 km road which runs from Port de Pollença to Cap de Formentor was built by the Italian engineer Antonio Parietti. He also constructed the snake road to Sa Calobra. Instead of being overwhelmed by what stood in his way on the cliffs, Parretti observed the Tramuntana winds and understood: where the slope was too steep, he made a curve. When he had to remove part of the cliffs, he placed the waste in other places where it was needed. The result was the two roads, which are nestled together in the mountains. Both these roads are very popular with cyclists with a lot of the major teams practicing here in the winter off season. . . . . #Mallorca #bikemallorca #Spain #capdeformentor #cliffs

Photo by FransLanting Look at this black rhino calf—frisky and curious, ears pointing my way as I watch its mother laboriously raising herself. Only one of her ears is pointing in my direction. The other one is checking what is happening behind her. Rhinos rely on their sharp sense of hearing and an acute sense of smell to make up for not seeing very well. In Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, they’re relatively protected, but that is not the case for most rhinos elsewhere in Africa and Asia. They’ve been hammered by poachers, and it’s more important than ever to draw attention to their plight, and to the people and organizations that are trying to turn things around, including the World Wildlife Fund, Save the Rhino, and WildAid. Help them help rhinos survive and spread the word on September 22 which is World Rhino Day. Photo by KristaRossow // Adélie penguins group together along the water's edge at Brown Bluff in #Antarctica before one brave #penguin takes the plunge and prompts a group pile-in. These birds aren't timid because of the cold water, their feathers are amazing insulation, but fear becoming lunch for leopard seals which troll the coastline. Apparently, they've found strength in numbers.

Photo by max.lowe // Drenched in morning light, a fisherman comes ashore after a nights work off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Much of the fishing in Sri Lanka is still done by crews of 8-12 men in small wooden outriggers like these pictured here, almost always painted in bright color and design.

Photo by andrea_frazzetta // Tibet, the massive Noijin Kangsang glacier, 7,206 metres (23,641ft) above sea level, in the Lhagoi Kangri chain. Mt.Noijin Kangsang is the closest major Himalayan peak to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The mount is known as holy peak for the local Tibetans and people used to burn incense and put prayer flags for the peak. Tibetan prayer flags are traditionally used to promote peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Tibetans believe the wind will blow the prayers and mantras in to the surroundings, spreading goodwill and compassion. Video by bertiegregory. A female bottlenose dolphin and her calf glide through the waters off Gubal Island in the northern Red Sea. I was lucky enough to spend over an hour with this pair as they swam laps around me. It's incredible to think that bottlenose dolphins are capable of diving well over 250m deep. With its 1,500+ lakes and more than 1,200 km (745 mi) of navigable routes, it is a very popular destination for canoeing and camping.
