Tootie (5/6) Look at these details! On March 19, 2005, the police blocked off the road that the Mardi Gras Indians were using and fire into crowds. Tootie died on June 27, 2005, while making a speech at the New Orleans City Council Chamber against the NOPD abuse of the Mardi Gras Indians. In the middle of his speech Tootie suffered from a heart attack. #throwbackpic #beforetrump #neworleans #mardigrasindians #neworleansmardigras #carnival #exploreneworleans #visitnola #nola #louisiana #neworleans #visitneworleans #igersneworleans #iheartnola #igersnola #crescentcity #beyondbourbonst #beautifulneworleans #followyournola #showmeyournola

Tootie (4/6) Each of the 30 to 40 Mardi Gras Indians tribes has a big chief. He must know how to design and sew his costume, dance, sing and lead. He also has a queen. When a big chief meets another big chief, they compete (a bit like two big groose :p) This is thanks to Tootie's work as Big Chief. He pacified the relationships between the tribes by instauring a dance and song competition instead of a bloody revenge. He also put colours, beads and feathers in the costume, believing that after so much hard work preparing it, nobody would tarnish it. #throwbackpic #beforetrump #neworleans #mardigrasindians #neworleansmardigras #carnival #exploreneworleans #visitnola #nola #louisiana #neworleans #visitneworleans #igersneworleans #iheartnola #igersnola #crescentcity #beyondbourbonst #beautifulneworleans #followyournola #showmeyournola

Tootie (3/6) A lot of slaves fled to the bayous and met native Americans who took care of them. As a result, they mixed their traditions together and it resulted in the Mardi Gras Indians. Masking in "Indian suits at Carnival is a way to pay respect to the people who looked after escaped slaves." Mardi Gras Indians are in fact Black who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel. But it was not always that peaceful. When Mardi Gras krewes excluded Blacks in 1800s, African-Americans began to celebrate in their own neighborhoods, forming separate tribes fighting each other. For a long time, Carnival was a day of revenge. Any Indian seeking revenge could execute it. New Orleans was called the battlefield. Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana was shocked by this violence and the lack of respect for a tradition people had died for. Great grandson of the first creole to mask with the Indians, Tootie was immersed at a young age in the culture of Mardi Gras Indians #throwbackpic #beforetrump #neworleans #mardigrasindians #neworleansmardigras #carnival #exploreneworleans #visitnola #nola #louisiana #neworleans #visitneworleans #igersneworleans #iheartnola #igersnola #crescentcity #beyondbourbonst #beautifulneworleans #followyournola #showmeyournola
