This mornings mouth watering breaky bowl served up by my brother was packed with protein, vitamins, minerals & antioxidants! The base of this bowl was overnight soaked lupin + oats. ‘Lupin’ you say?: A legume milled into a oat like flake that contains 43% protein, perfect ratio of muscle building amino acids, 37% fibre & only 4% carbohydrates. And it’s gluten free🌱💪🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On top is cacao nibs (super high in antioxidants), chia seeds (a complete protein source containing all 9 essential amino acids and rich source of essential fatty acids for brain function & cardiovascular health), strawberries (amazing Vitamin C source which is super important for collagen production & vital for your overall skin health) & Kiwi fruit (another potent Vitamin C source - 5x more Vitamin C than an orange. Kiwi fruit also contains vitamin A, Lutein, folate and fibre). All ingredients today from terramadreorganics in Melbourne which offers an amazing selection of high quality whole foods at super competitive prices. The most common question I get about being vegan is “but how do you get your protein” to which I often feel like responding with “where do you get your fibre from”? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The truth is the majority of people eating a typical animal focussed western diet do not get the recommended intake of fibre (20-35g) whereas a balanced plant based (all plants contain some fibre) diet guarantees guarantees you will be hitting your daily fibre requirements. In addition to that have you ever heard of Kwashiorkor? Didn’t think so/ that’s because that’s the scientific name for protein deficiency and it is really only ever seen in 3rd world countries where children are starved + have malnutrition. So back to fibre 💪🏼 - Most vegans get 35-50g of fibre/day. Fibre for plants is basically the same as bones is for animals... it’s the ‘structural’ component that holds every plant together & has been shown in many studies to: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️ Reduce cardiovascular disease - 1 study in particular found an additional 10g of fibre/day reduced coronary events by 14% + coronary death by 27%. Its theorised that this protective cardiovascular effect may be a result of viscous fibre binding to cholesterol containing bile + then helping carry it out when you go to the toilet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️ Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by delaying the absorption of fat + carbs from the small intestine thus affecting insulin levels. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️ Reduce weight + obesity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️Keep you regular helping to prevent constipation and haemorrhoids. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Remember adequate fibre intake is just 1 benefit of switching to an all plant based diet. So what common plant foods can you get your fibre from? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Very High + High fibre sources (5-20g/cup): legumes, split peas, avocados, bran cereals, blackberries & raspberries, apricots, dates, figs, peaches, pears, coconut flesh, flaxseeds, artichoke, grains (whole grains) + potato. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Low to moderate fibre (less than 5g/cup): blueberries and strawberries, other fruits, nuts + seeds, pasta, popcorn, most other vegetables + refined grains (white) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Simon 🙏🏼🌱 charlesgr

Let’s talk about calcium 🌱💪🏼! For an average male or female in their 20’s and 30’s the recommended daily intake (RDI) is 1000mg. As we get older it goes up to 1300mg and it’s also higher during our teenage years where it’s important to lay down a strong bone structure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Calcium has many important roles in the body & is much more than purely a mineral for bone strength (despite what media and marketing would have you believe). In addition to Calcium there are other vitamins and minerals that all work in conjunction to promote a strong skeletal system - namely Phosphorus, Vitamin D and Vitamin K2. Calcium gets all the hype and our attention because of the milk industry making us think it’s the be all and end all for proper bone strength....”we will have osteoporosis if we don’t consume cow milk” is how we are programmed from our early days. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other than bone strength Calcium plays a very important role in: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️Neural signals ✔️Heart rate, rhythm and contraction ✔️Skeletal muscle contraction ✔️Blood clotting ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know we have grown up thinking of it as COWLCIUM however studies have shown that we do not need to drink cows milk to get our daily calcium we can avoid cows milk and get calcium without the pus cells, hormones and blood! Furthermore clinical research has shown you can absorb the same amount of calcium from fortified Soy milk as you can from cows milk, if not more (around 300-400mg per cup). It’s time to unlearn what marketing unfortunately made us believe ❌🐮 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other than soy milk or another fortified plant milk some of the other best places to find Calcium in a plant based diet are dark leafy greens: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bok Choy Kale Broccoli ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ & ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fortified tofu, Chia seeds, sesame seeds or tahini, beans, almond butter, black currants, figs, oats and amaranth 💪🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Want to increase your calcium absorption?
