A shocking and disturbing sight: A famine stricken girl that collapsed on a trail as a vulture watches over her while waiting for her to die. Ayod, Southern Sudan. March 26th 1993. During the early 1990's there was a civil war in Sudan and also a large famine in the south. Over a million people suffered from the effects of starvation and thousands starved to death. The United Nations and other agencies set up camps for Sudanese refugees, including a camp near Ayod. Photographer Kevin Carter made a trip to the region, and saw this scene. The girl was apparently attempting to crawl to the UN camp as her parents went to find food there, and she had stopped to rest. Tragically, it is thought that as many as 20 people starved to death every hour at the camp, so this girl was not unique and her situation was the same as a great many others. Photographers there were given specific orders to not interact with the famine stricken people for fear of spreading disease, so he was unable to help her. He took a few photos and then chased the vulture away, although he claimed that he did see the girl eventually get up and keep going. The photo was published in the New York Times amid much controversy, and Carter was accused of inhumanity and selfishness for not helping the child any further. He was eventually given the Pulitzer Prize for the photo and more work was done by relief agencies in Africa as a result of this photo's impact, but he soon started to suffer from depression. Kevin Carter eventually committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning on July 27th 1994. To this day the name and fate of the child in the photo remains unknown. ____________________________ #postcoldwar #sudan #southsudan #sudanesecivilwar #famine #civilwar #unitednations #photography #africa #newyorktimes #unitedstates #allies #warphotography #warphotos #soldiers #combat #combatphotos #alliedhistory #historybuff #historynerd
