it's been so cold here lately that all i've been craving is hot, yummy bowls of soup! (anyone else?) to save time and maximize the food i buy, i've been batch cooking a big recipe over the weekend and freezing it for later. i like this process because it allows me to use a ton of fresh ingredients, have ready-made meals on hand when i'm on the move (or feeling lazy), and avoid sending uneaten food to the compost heap or landfill (win-win, right?). soup is just one of the meals i do this for, but some other things you might try include: • smoothie ingredients • tomato sauces • baby food • bread doughs • veggies (for stocks or sauces)

Day 17: “Use package free soap/shampoo. I use the “No poo” method for several years. This means I stopped using all shampoos or baking soda or apple cider vinegar, only water. I went cold turkey. My hair grows better and is healthier. Occasionally I do a henna mask (5 minutes). I am 55 years old and I have almost no gray hair #nopoomethod #zerowastevegan #30daystozerowaste #trashfree #goinggreen #sustainablebeauty

My latest blog post gives you 8 easy ways to go low waste that also save money. _________ ➡️ I have to say, the top 4 are using cloth napkins and rags (no paper towels), real plates and silverware, and a safety razor. These changes alone have reduced my waste by a lot and saved me more than 💲400 a year! _________ The last change I made was the safety razor because I was terrified of it. But after buying the last pack of $30 refill cartridges for a plastic Gillette razor I decided to try it out. I knew it would be cheaper, but was surprised to learn by how much. In a year I was spending $180 on those crappy refills ($2 a piece), and a new safety razor runs between $15 and $30. Refills are at $10 for 50, so 20 cents a piece. That means I save $140 with that switch. And I also learned that safety razors shave so much better than the regular razors, although there is a bit of a learning curve. __________ Click the link in bio to read the blog post and get more info and tips.

I’ve picked up this #perfectlyimperfect apple a few days ago at my local supermarket 🍏 I didn’t see it’s superficial imperfections at first but when I realized the mark I quickly put the apple back down and went for another one. As you can tell I ended up getting this apple anyways because to me conscious consumerism means voting for certain products by buying them. Just think about the message being sent when all of those imperfect apples would remain unbought at the end of the day. Unfortunately this seems to be quite usual. At the same time people keep getting annoyed about higher food standards that cause farmers having to destroy fruits and vegetables with superficial imperfections. Sorry for this rant but maybe some of you can relate? I’d love to hear your experiences! And finally guess what? This apple was super delicious 💚! #plastikfrei #foodwaste #zerowaste #wastefree #trashfree #consciousliving #consciouseating #consciousconsumer #sustainableliving #sustainablelifestyle #sustainablefarming #plastikfrei #

#seasponges have so many different uses! From body/facial cleansing all the way to #seaspongetampons . Once we personally discovered sea sponges we have yet to go without a few different sets in our home. Sea sponges are harvested high enough from the base of the sponge that it give plenty of space for the sponge to regrow. This alone makes sea sponges #sustainable . Sponge harvesting is NOT aloud in certain protected coral reefs, for those of you wondering.

When we think about plastic bottle waste, it's easy to forget about the bottles we have in our bathrooms. . . Try using package free hand soaps, shampoo bars, conditioner, bars or look for those products in better packaging. . . Shampoo bars can be found at most health food stores now or you can use companies like plaineproducts who have a circular business model for their shampoo and conditioner packaging. . . You could also try to train your hair to require less soap or even try a "no-poo" routine. Anyone have success with that? . . 🔎Sources: earth911 forbes natgeo

One of my favorite zero waste tricks is to utilize the salad bar. The salad bar is filled with package free items that are often really difficult to find plastic-free (like tofu!). My Co-Op lakewindsfoodcoop is so amazing that I can tare and use my own jar at the salad and olive bar. Other stores like wholefoods might offer reusable plates that you can put your items on. Then after checkout you can transfer your items to your own takeaway container. It’s an awesome resource! 🌿🌎❤️

I want to feature a few things we were already doing before we started this project, as well as new things we are trying. A few years ago, I started making my own granola bars. It took me a while to settle on a recipe I really liked, but now we make these every week. We have small tupperware containers from IKEA that are the perfect size for one granola bar, so we don't have to wrap them all in anything. Here's the recipe (a lot of these things can be substituted with other options - if it seems like it’s the same texture, it’ll probably work)! . . Mix the following dry ingredients: 1 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1/4 cup flour (can be gluten free if needed), 1/2 cup dried unsweetened coconut, 1/3 cup uncooked millet, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp hemp hearts, 2 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 cup dried cranberries (or whatever dried fruit you like), 1/4 cup chocolate chips, 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds . . Mix wet ingredients in separate bowl: 1/2 cup sunflower seed butter (I work in a nut-free school, so I have to use sunflower seed you can use nut butter if you want), 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup honey, 1 egg . . Mix wet ingredients into dry, making sure all the dry ingredients get well-coated. Either grease 8x8 pan with butter/oil, or line with compostable parchment paper. Wet hands with cold water and press mixture firmly into pan (really compact it). Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Let them dry completely before cutting. Enjoy!!

#30daystozerowaste // Day 16: JUNK MAIL. zerowastenerd has some amazing and EASY ways to unsubscribe from junk mail on her blog. Check it out! I didn’t even know you could do that but you better believe I’ll be heading to her blog to take some notes! Junk mail is such a waste. #explorezerowaste • I realized after I posted this that I left our names and address nice and exposed for everyone to steal our identities 😂😂

I had about 27 goals going into this year, a lot of them are good and I’ll continue to work on but the one that stands out the most is going trash free! I’m SO excited for this year and the positivity it’s going to bring and hope that this [kinda huge] lifestyle change will help foster the goodness! #zerowaste #trashfree #savetheearth🌎
