🌿 August of another summer, and once again I am drinking the sun and the lilies again are spread across the water. I know now what they want is to touch each other. I have not been here for many years during which time I kept living my life. Like the heron, who can only croak, who wishes he could sing, I wish I could sing. A little thanks from every throat would be appropriate. This is how it has been, and this is how it is: All my life I have been able to feel happiness, except whatever was not happiness, which I also remember. Each of us wears a shadow. But just now it is summer again and I am watching the lilies bow to each other, then slide on the wind and the tug of desire, close, close to one another, Soon now, I'll turn and start for home. And who knows, maybe I'll be singing. . Mary Oliver, The Pond 🌿 . . . . . . . . #maryoliver #thepond #summer #august #austin #texas #heartseedsaustin #beenacre

During youth athlete training, we like to slow things down and focus on tempo work (forgive the video—it was their first lift POWERSPORTfit). With athletes who are new to strength training, it is important to develop technical proficiency by focusing on the eccentric/isometric portions of a lift to set the athletes up with a solid foundation for future training that includes maximal strength and power development. Oftentimes, new lifters move too fast and momentum becomes a major factor. When this happens, the muscles may not sufficiently be worked, and the fast and jerky motions may lead to injury. ---------------------------------------- By starting with a focus on eccentric and isometric phases, the long descending phase and the pause at the bottom of the lift allow us time to coach. We want our athletes to recognize that if they move through the eccentric portion of a lift too fast, they are missing out on strength and technical development, in addition to risking getting injured. In these portions of the lift, things can go wrong once we speed up the tempo and add more weight. ---------------------------------------- At the bottom of the lift, by making athletes definitively pause for a few seconds, this teaches them where the bottom of the lift is. We always want athletes to use their full range of motion because this promotes technical proficiency, maximizes strength and muscle development, as well as improves range of motion. ➡️ EXAMPLE: If an athlete consistently uses a limited range of motion during squats, when a game situation occurs when the athlete needs a greater range of motion, he or she will not be optimally prepared. By focusing on isometric holds, athletes will gain better control and understanding of full range of motion movements and will have the best foundation for the future. ---------------------------------------- The basis of our philosophy is shared with strength and conditioning coach jjbonyai. Again, with this type of training, we are teaching our athletes technical proficiency, and building structural integrity (stronger tendons, ligaments, etc.). This will help prevent future injury and improve overall performance.
