So very proud of my first ever proper #cucumber It’s small but it’s meant to be and tastes amazing! Last year the fruit flies got all my apple cucumbers and my regular cucumbers failed probably from being planted too early. I’ve also invested in high quality soil this year. I hope there are going to be hundreds like my son and his girlfriend said these Estonian cucumbers where on every meal table. Bowls full! So happy they brought seeds. Breakfast was a raw asparagus, this cucumber, a few blackberries, blueberries and raspberries while I pottered in the drizzle. #capetown has being giving us wonderfully joy weekends and cool wet midweeks. What more could you ask for?! 🙌🏻 May it continue all summer long 😁 I’ll be a bit slack on IG with exam week, early school finishing and trying to do all December things before this month is over and I must go to our butchery so sorry if I’m slack on replies. Have a great week everyone 🙋🏻 . . . #eattherainbow #eatclean #eatrealfood #glutenfree #grainfree #lchf #banting #paleo #growfoodnotlawns #growyourown #homegrown #fruit #vegetables #herbs #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #amazinggardener #thehappygardeninglife #epicgardening

Can you believe that big vine on the bottom right is still producing after I planted it in 2016!! I never took it out last summer and it stayed alive all year only to start producing again! It's a marrow vine and I pick the young fruit just like zucchini. I have been burying their stems with soil to give them as much of a root system as possible. Let's see how that goes....

I found these at the store and thought I should try it. I've never done a formal cover crop. Anybody got any tips or advice?

[Spring 2017] Garlic, leeks and spring onions were a mild success! I must admit I was dubious garlic would produce a bulb here in the subtropics and I was right!! . After watching my Southern Hemisphere friends planting garlic back in Mar/Apr, I was gifted some sprouting garlic by my friend Sue ( cosmoj) which I planted along with some other organic garlic that had sprouted. #peerpressure The garlic I planted with the tomatoes didn’t survive. But the garlic in this bed of carrots, beets, lettuce, silverbeet, leeks and spring onions seemed to survive ... at least! Over the last few weeks I have watched southern hemisphere IG folk harvest their impressive garlic. I kept checking mine but although there was a very strong odour there was no protuding bulb or dying leaves. This morning, after finding 2 garlic scapes and a few brown leaves i decided the onion family was due to get-out-of-bed to free up space for the next round of summer veges! And I was pleasantly surprised the garlic was actually large and round. However when i opened one up it is just one big onion-like bulb not cloves. As Alys Fowler advises “Garlic needs 30 nights at less than 10C over the winter for the cloves to develop properly. If this doesn’t happen, then you do just get one fat onion-like bulb.” We had a very warm, dry winter and few nights under 10C! Not sure how to use these ‘garlic bulbs’ now. But will try again next year in the hope of a colder winter 🤞🙂🌱🌱 . . . . . . . . #growyourownfood #organic #growyourown #garlic #leek #urbanfarming #organicgardening #urbanorganicgardener #kitchengarden #inmygarden #gardentotable #greenthumb #homegrown #fromseed #eatrealfood #ediblegarden #subtropical #permaculture #raisedbeds #organicgardenermag #plantbased #urbangardenersrepublic #lobotany #epicgardening #allotment #gardeningaustralia #growsomethinggreen #thehappygardeninglife

Sorry for my absence last weekend, but we had been on a market two days and sold our honey and beeswaxcandles, which was really fun. There was no time for some gardening or Instagram, nevertheless I was able to get a photo from this little swisschard in my greenhouse. I hope you'll have a good start into the new week. ☀️☀️☀️ #garten #garden #raw #organicfood #organicgardening #urbangardenersrepublic #urbangardening #urbanorganicgardener #epicgardening #vegan #plantbased #thehappygardeninglife #selfsufficiency #selbstversorgung #sustainablefarming #homegrown #homesteadlife #backyardgardening #biodynamic #bethechange #wintergardening #growsomethinggreen #growyourownfood #liveslowly #livewithnature #liveyourdream #KassiOlino

Garlic sprouts or scallions are delicately garlicky and don’t have the same strong flavour as the mature cured garlic. When harvested this young, the green leaves are also used much like spring onions. Their delicate flavour makes them ideal to use in salads, left whole or in bigger pieces, for curries, soups or roasted with veg. 👌😋💚 I also tend to harvest garlic leaves if I want to add some extra deliciousness to my salads. This means that the bulb still gets to grow, while I get to enjoy some garlic greens 🙌🌱🌱💚 . . I am loosing the battle agains Mr. Bunny in the garden! As soon as my seedlings emerge he is on to the most tender and tasty seedling. 🐰🌱😋I woke up to find Capsicums, Okra and some of my Blackeyed Peas eaten! He is cute but t I think I’ll have to pull out the big guns (by that I mean a trap!! 😬😬😰) to catch the little bugger!! 😜😂Warm spring weather continues here in Melbourne 🙏☀️ and the garden is looking great! 🌱🌱🌱😍💚 . . . . . . I’m off to see my daughter perform at a charity event. She has grown into a beautiful violinist and plays as part of an orchestra on a weekly basis. This afternoon the orchestra is performing at a hospital as part of their music therapy for their patients. The music will be recorded and present and future patients will benefit in all kinds of ways as part of the hospitals music therapy program ... wishing you all a beautiful day/night lovely people. Always with love Ozlem 💚💞❤️🏡☀️🌈🌹🌏 . . . . . #lovegrowsinthisgarden #urbangardenersrepublic #urbanorganicgardener #thehappygardeninglife #hydrovegan #lobotany #seedaddic #seedsnow #gardenersofinstagram #gardenactivist #gardeningaustralia #gardening_feature #organicgardenermag #organicgardening #growsomethinggreen #growyourown #freshveggies #summerfruit #gardeninglife #greengarden #mygardentoday #home #goorganic #video #gogreen #openyourheart #openyoureyes #garlic #garlicscapes

Someone's been nibbling on my cucumbers! Suggestions? 🤔 Overall, the cucumber vines seem happy...this white variety is very vigorous, more so than my green one. Now I just need to protect them from critters. A garlic/chili spray maybe? #growyourownfood #growsomethinggreen #urbangarden #urbanfarming #urbanfarm #kitchengarden #thehappygardeninglife #gardeningphoto #growsomething #instagarden #permaculture #nongmo #saynotogmo #growfromseed #cucumber
