[Amber is a step of science] Amber is valued for its botanical and animal.inclusions that are trapped by the sticky resin as it flows as sap, which is also organic. For sure, other life is captured including microscopic bacteria, that often produce gas bubbles, and various fungi. Both the botanical and animal inclusions not only add beauty, but also are of potential acientiv value in the study of taxonomy and evolution. Aesop challenged us to conceive and design an online hub which celebrated their design story through an immersive digital experience that captured each unique and immersive store around the world. Our response, Taxonomy of Design, was a dissection of Aesop’s design philosophy, telling a rich story layered through the categorisation and classification of the brand’s elemental parts. www.taxonomyofdesign.com #aesoptaxonomyofdesign #aesop #fabioongaratodesign #aesopstore #marchstudio #dimorestudio #schemataarchitects #nadaaa #cibi #weissheiten #johnrandolph #henrywilson #kirstinthompson #sixdegreesarchitects #snøhetta #williamobrienjr #vincenzodecotiis #metroarquitetos #brooksscarpa #shinichiroogata #wisearchitecture #cjarchitects #inpraiseofshadows #architectureoutfit #tackleboxarchitecture #cigue #studioilse

These are samples of benthic macroalgae collected from a back-reef lagoon off the north shore of Little Cayman. Students will use these samples to get their feet wet with marine plant identification. Why are macroalgae important? A reef is a two-state, or biphasic, ecosystem. A coral dominated community is one state (or basin of attraction), and an algae-dominated community is the other. Corals build the reef by taking calcium carbonate out of the water as depositing it as limestone. Different species of coral grow these rocky skeletons in different shapes, so a diverse coral community maintains a dynamic underwater architecture, which supports an amazingly diverse reef ecosystem. Algae do not build reefs, and they compete with coral for space and resources. It takes a lot for the system to switch between states, but many reefs globally are currently switching from coral to algae—mostly due to warming and acidifying water stressing corals and making them less able to compete. Our students will hopefully use their algae ID skills to measure the coral-algae dynamics here on Little Cayman. #BioFSP #coral #algae #ecology #nature #macroalgae #science #globalchange #taxonomy #benthic #marine #coralreef #reef #caribbean #cayman #littlecayman #CCMI #petri #flatlaytoday

#novataxa #Crayfish #Crustacean #NewGuinea #Biodiveristy • 2017 :: #Cherax warsamsonicus • A #NewSpecies of Crayfish ( #Decapoda, Parastacidae) from the #KepalaBurung (Vogelkop) Peninsula in #WestPapua, #Indonesia novataxa.blogspot.com DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.660.11847 Abstract :: A new species, Cherax #warsamsonicus sp. n., endemic to the #Warsamson River drainage, in the western part of the Kepala Burung ( #Vogelkop) peninsula, West Papua, Indonesia, is described, figured and compared with its closely related species, Cherax #misolicus Holthuis, 1949. The new species may be easily distinguished from C. misolicus by the shape of the rostrum, absence of setae on the #rostrum, the shape of the chelae, the presence of 3-4 cervical spines and by using sequence divergence, which is substantial for considering C. warsamsonicus sp. n. to be a new #species. The new species is collected and exported for ornamental purposes and its commercial name in the #pettrade is Cherax “ #irianjaya”, Cherax “ #pinkcoral”, or Cherax “ #hoacreek“. Due to similar colouration it is often confused with the recently described Cherax #pulcher Lukhaup, 2015. #Crustacea #morphology #Parastacidae #taxonomy #WarsamsonRiver #freshwater #VogelkopPeninsulaC. The Lactarius deliciosus group is a phylogenetic headache and proves why mushroom taxonomy is not for the faint of heart. The group comprises a number of varieties that share some distinct characteristics: Pileus is Orange to Red-Orange, staining an olive or greenish color, convex or depressed with incurved margin and decurrent hymenium. The mushroom I am featuring will hopefully be classified as a unique species one day, but for now I have no choice but to let an inaccurate name suffice... And it really irks me. The true "Saffron Milkcap" is native to Europe and not a species found in America. We apparently have at least 5 varieties of Lactarius deliciosus here in North America with 3 apparent varieties that occur in Western North America, according to Hesler and Smith (1979). The "olivaceosordidus" variety is primarily Mycorrhizal with Sitka spruce; distribution scattered, or gregariously (rarely alone); August through early December in western North America from Alaska to California and New Mexico.

I have my personal corridors in the now famous #PNW #powellsbookstore #Porland – one is the rare book room, where I can roam for what feels hours – recently I discovered a most timely and wonderful volume, ‘Histoire Naturelle des Orangers’ – by Joseph Antoine Risso, a French apothecary and botanist from Nice in the South of France, and Pierre Antoin Poiteau, who was an apprentice gardener at the Jardin des Plantes and a botanical illustrator in Paris, publishing this collaborative anthology in 1872 – I was given the opportunity to take her from her glassed case, to sit and browse her exquisite pages, however only with gloves, a first for me there – an extensive journey ensued through #Citrus ; history, mythology, taxonomy and cultivar descriptions sweeping through bitter, sweet and bergamot oranges, grapefruit, lumies, lemons, limes, citrons and related genara – her visuals, her smells (images and physical pages), the #vicarioustransport and dreaming she initiated was true brilliance – and today, in curiosity I journeyed to understand more about her origins to also discover her first edition calls forward the sum of $25,000.oo (now I understand the ‘gloves’) – she became fuel into my internal fire destined to #Italy – end of day filled with #emaromeEU design prep, an array of citrus essence now well-dispelled from their PBS strips that offered an enveloping in a #synesthetic kaleidoscope of blues, violet, purple, flashes of greens and magenta, white framed in both silver and gold flakes –a delle #Venezie Contadino Pinot Grigio fizzling effervescence in a botanically engraved martini glass and #Verona Opera spinning at the turnstile #sensploration #botanicalillustration #olfactorymapping #sensesasdoorways #synestheticnomad #soundtrackofmylife #aromaasartanddesign aromaasart
