As part of a global vigil, Manly was the site this evening for the coming together of Sydney supporters of those working to free Dolphins, both present and future from a life of captivity. The evening was held to commemorate the Dolphins that have lost their lives and freedom in the name of a money driven industry as well as for those who work tirelessly. The 1st March also marks the end of another bloody season of slaughter in The Cove in Taiji #DolphinFreedomNow #EmptyTheTanks #CoveGuardians #Taiji #TheCove

Today it is my turn to leave Taiji and the captive dolphins behind. For the past six weeks I have had the immense honour and privilege of working with a diverse and inspiring team from all corners of the earth who share one common thread- our passion for the oceans, and our unwavering determination to stop the crimes against nature that are the dolphin drive hunts in Japan. In my time here in Taiji, I have witnessed 137 dolphins taken captive from the ocean, 132 dolphins horrifically slaughtered, 4 dolphins die during a captive selection, and 2 babies dumped at sea to die alone and wounded, their mothers ripped from them by the hunters. This season a total of 1282 dolphins have been driven into the cove, 595 were slaughtered and 232 have been incarcerated in pens, a halfway house before they are transferred to captive facilities to live, or rather survive, in concrete tanks performing tricks for human entertainment. The burning question is, “what’s next?” Now that the drive hunt season has ceased for another six months, but the truth is there is no end to the suffering of the dolphins here in Taiji. I leave behind close to 200 dolphins in the sea pens around Taiji harbour, I leave behind the dozens of dolphins barely surviving in the Taiji Whale Museum, the dolphins I never laid eyes on atop the roof of Dolphin Resort, and every dolphin transferred across the land or sea. Their pain lives on. The captivity industry is the economic driving force of the drive hunts, without which this so called tradition would fade away into the history books where it belongs.Direct action in Taiji means documentation, this campaign is about education, changing public perception on the deceptive marketing of the dolphins smile by the captivity industry and unveiling the gruesome truth that befouls it. To be continued...

As the drive hunt season draws to a close today, one of our Cove Guardians wrote a poem of reflection on his experiences in Taiji.Infinite PatienceDedicated to all dolphins, that lost their lives and their freedom in TaijiThis is Taiji where greed has formed a vicious industry A place of ruthless crueltywhere dolphins diein dreadful agonyA place of everlasting miserywhere dolphins swimin sad captivityAnd a place of transient beautywhere shepherds come to do their dutyWhile hope and despairdefine our daysevery dolphin finds a place in our heartsand we will continue our missionwith infinite patience_______________________________________Philipp, Cove Guardian
