Yesterday was one of the more intense hikes I’ve been on. There are 3 routes to the peak of Mt. Baldy. 6.4 miles one way, 6000ft ascent starting in the village, 3.3 miles, 4000ft ascent if you drive 4 miles up the road or 3.2 miles, 2500ft ascent if you drive 4.5 miles up the road and take the ski lift up part way. I wanted the full experience so I went for the 6.4 mile, 6000ft ascent to the 10,068ft peak. It was a steep, winding trail that had some nice views. It was certainly a challenge. About 3/4 of the way up I was thinking that one of the shorter hikes would have been just fine. For the final 1/4 of the ascent I was walking a mountain ridge. The wind was bitter cold and super aggressive. I went from wearing a t-shirt to putting on every piece of clothing that I had and was leaning into the wind while walking. I finally made it to the top and it felt like the arctic tundra. I pulled a mitten off to get a quick video and my hand went numb immediately. I wanted to chill and watch the sunset because the view was amazing but there was no shelter from the wind so I decided to get out of there. I headed down a shorter trail that would end near the ski resort. I heard there was a restaurant there and thought I could get some food and a beer and ask someone to drive me down to my car for some $. I hiked down the 3.3 mile trail in the dark and found that the restaurant was closed and nobody was around. The only option was to walk another 4 miles along this seemingly endless dirt road to the main road, so that’s what I did. I got to the main road at around 8:30pm and knew I was still 4 miles away from my car. I walked down the road and started to hitch hike when a car would pass. I probably walked another 2 miles before this awesome kid who was going the opposite direction asked if I wanted a ride. I got back to where I was parked at 9:30pm. Total I hiked about 16 miles and ascended 6000ft. I saw a tavern across the street and heard live music so I went in. I ate one of the best steaks I l’ve ever had, drank beer by the fire place and listened to an awesome blues band until midnight. Overall a crazy, awesome adventure!
