November 18, 2000 - "Independent Women Part 1" by Destiny's Child started an eleven week run at No.1 on the US singles chart. It was written by Beyoncé, Cory Rooney and The Trackmasters, Poke & Tone. The song first appeared as the soundtrack to the 2000 film adaption of Charlie's Angels, and later included in the group's third studio album, Survivor (2001). It is also the first single with Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin on vocals, though Franklin was no longer in the group's lineup by the time the video was filmed. . Originally, part two of the song was the actual song and part one was known as the Pasadena remix, but it was chosen in favor of the original and was dubbed part one. Beyoncé's father and then-manager, Mathew Knowles, submitted the track to the Charlie's Angels soundtrack without her knowledge. Destiny's Child's label, Sony Music, whose film studio was distributing the Charlie Angels film, decided that it would be a great fit for the movie, which portrayed the lead characters as tough, liberated women. They wanted the hit sound of Poke & Tone, however, so they commissioned the duo to remix the track and have the group alter the lyrics to suit the film. Instead of remixing it, Poke & Tone completely reworked the song, earning lucrative writing credits in the process. This second version of the song was released first, so it was labeled, Independent Women Part I. The song was nominated for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media at the 2001 Grammy Awards. It was also ranked at number 85 on the list of Britain's favorite 100 songs, published in May 2002. It was also named the 18th most successful song of the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. The music video was shot in Los Angeles from August 27 to September 1, 2000 and directed by Francis Lawrence. #destinyschild #thisdayinmusic #2000 #2000s #IndependentWomen #beyonce #kellyrowland beyonce kellyrowland #MichelleWilliams #poke #tone #Trackmasters #SamuelBarnes #JeanClaudeOlivier #CoryRooney #FrancisLawrence #MathewKnowles #charliesangels #FarrahFranklin #columbiarecords #picplaypost picplaypost #musichistory

November 18, 2000 - Jay-Z went to No.1 on the US album chart with The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. It is the fifth studio album released by American rapper Jay-Z. Its lead single, "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)", produced by The Neptunes, was one of Jay-Z's most successful singles peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 with 557,789 copies sold in its first week. The album ended up becoming the 20th highest selling R&B/Hip-Hop Album of the 2000–2010 decade according to Billboard. Originally a Roc-A-Fella Records compilation album, a showcase for Roc-A-Fella artists such as Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Amil and Freeway, which eventually became another Jay-Z solo album (or at least marketed as one to increase sales), although the Roc-A-Fella artists are abundant on this album. Big name guest appearances have been limited to three – Snoop Dogg, R. Kelly, and Scarface – to make room for the Roc-A-Fella family. Rather than using big-name producers such as Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, who had featured prominently on Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, Jay-Z had decided to feature more up-and-coming producers at the time of this album, such as Just Blaze, Kanye West, Bink! and The Neptunes. Partially as a result of this exposure, these producers would achieve notable success in the future. This was also the first album of Jay-Z's not to feature work by long time producer DJ Premier. Given Just Blaze and Kanye West's penchant for utilizing soul samples in their beats, the album features a smoother sound than Jay-Z's previous efforts, though Bay Area-based producer Rick Rock includes a more minimalist sound in his four productions. #jayz #thisdayinmusic #2000 #2000s #TheDynastyRocLaFamilia #hiphop #rocafella #defjam #kanyewest #theneptunes #justblaze #snoopdogg #rkelly #scarface #rickrock #MemphisBleek #BeanieSigel #Amil #Freeway #Rockwilder #picplaypost picplaypost #musichistory

November 18, 1985 - LL Cool J's debut album 'Radio' was released. It is a landmark in the history of hip-hop. As the first full-length album released by the legendary hip-hop label Def Jam, 'Radio' made an indelible mark on rap music for not only the historic nature of its release but the powerful quality of the music. The album was primarily produced by Rick Rubin. LL's aggressive rapping and Rick Rubin's stripped-down production were praised by critics who also agreed that LL's lyrics set a new standard for MC's at the time. In March 1984, when NYU student Rick Rubin and promoter-manager Russell Simmons founded the then-independent Def Jam label, 16 year–old St. Albans, Queens native James Todd Smith was creating demo tapes in his grandparents' home. His grandfather, a jazz saxophonist, purchased him $ 2,000 worth of stereo equipment, including two turntables, an audio mixer and an amplifier. Smith recalled: "I got into it when I was about 9, and since then all I wanted was to make a record and hear it on the radio." By using the mixing table he had received from his grandfather, Smith produced and mixed his own demos and sent them to various record companies in New York City, including Simmons' and Rubin's own Def Jam Recordings. Under his new stage name, LL Cool J (Ladies Love Cool James), Smith was signed by Def Jam, which led to the release of his first official record, the 12-inch single "I Need a Beat" (1984). Smith later recalled: I sent my demo to many different companies, but it was Def Jam where I found my home. LL Cool J dropped out of Andrew Jackson High School in Queens to record his first studio album. Recording sessions took place at Chung King Studios in Manhattan's Chinatown under Rubin's direction throughout 1984 and 1985. The album's release had been anticipated by many rap fans following LL Cool J's appearance in the hip hop movie Krush Groove, which was based on the beginnings of the Def Jam label and featured the single "I Can't Live Without My Radio" from Radio. By 1989, the album had earned platinum status from the RIAA, after earning a gold certification in the U.S. on April 14, 1986, with sales exceeding one million copies.

November 18, 1978 - Billy Joel went to No.1 on the US album chart with his sixth studio album, '52nd Street'. It was the first of four Joel albums to top the Billboard charts. Three songs reached the Top 40 in the United States, contributing to the album's success: "My Life" (No.3), "Big Shot" (No.14), and "Honesty" (No.24). It was similarly well received by critics, earning 1979 Grammys for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Male and Album of the Year. This 'Best Album' Grammy was presented to its producer, Phil Ramone. Upon Ramone's death in 2013, 52nd Street's Album of the Year Grammy was passed on to Joel. Allmusic praises Joel for expanding stylistically on 1977's The Stranger, describing 52nd Street as "more sophisticated and somewhat jazzy." (Jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard guests on "Zanzibar".) The title is a reference to 52nd Street, which was one of New York City's jazz centers in the middle of the century. Joel's label was headquartered on 52nd Street (in the CBS Building) at the time of the album's release. The studio in which 52nd Street was recorded was also on 52nd Street, a block away from the CBS Building. On October 1, 1982, 52nd Street became the first album to be commercially released on compact disc by Sony Music Entertainment when it went on sale in Japan. In 2003, the album was ranked number 352 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. #billyjoel #thisdayinmusic #1970s #1978 #52ndStreet #philramone #GrammyWinner #columbiarecords #goodmusic #picplaypost picplaypost #musichistory

November 18, 1972 - "I'll Be Around" by The Spinners peaked at No.3 on the US singles chart. The song was co-written by Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt and produced by Bell. It was The Spinners' producer Thom Bell who came up with the music and the title for the song. In an interview with Phil Hurtt, he explained: When Thommy said 'I'll be around,' I started thinking about a scenario and a story. Thommy was telling me, 'Whenever you call me, I'll be there.' That's one of the things he did give me. And I'm thinking, okay, great. So the guy broke up and he wants her back, whenever you call me I'll be there, whenever you need me, I'll be there. So, okay, great. And then the next thing I know, this is our fork in the road. And that's the way it happens. The song was included on the group's 1972 self-titled album on Atlantic Records, their first album release for the label. It was initially released as the B-side of the group's first single on Atlantic Records, with "How Could I Let You Get Away" being the A-side. Radio deejays, however, soon opted for "I'll Be Around" which led to Atlantic flipping the single over and the song became an unexpected hit, eventually spending five weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B chart (the group's first number-one on the R&B chart), and reaching number three on the U.S. Pop chart in the fall of 1972. It also reached sales of over one million copies, The Spinners' first record ever to do so. The success of "I'll Be Around" would be the first in a series of chart successes The Spinners and Bell would have together during the 1970s. The song has been covered by many artists. Among them are The Moments, The Afghan Whigs, Devon Allman, Joan Osborne, The Rippingtons featuring Jeffrey Osborne, Funk, Inc., Doug Parkinson, Richie Kotzen and Hall & Oates, whose version reached number six on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. #TheSpinners #thisdayinmusic #1972 #1970s #IllBeAround #PhilHurtt #BobbySmith #PhillippeWynne #PhillipTPugh #PervisJackson #HenryFambrough #BillyHenderson #ThomBell #MFSB #LindaCreed #SigmaSweethearts #BarbaraIngram #CarlaBenson #YvetteBenton #AtlanticRecords #lovethissong #picplaypost picplaypost #musichistory
