#Repost nyclgbtsites with get_repost ・・・ For the 1964 World's Fair, sited in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, artist Andy Warhol sparked controversy with his work "13 Most Wanted," a massive grid of enlarged silk-screened mug shots from the New York City Police Department’s 13 most wanted criminals of 1962. Each image was tiled together creating a large tableau of men looking over the grounds. The subversively homoerotic content – with the double entendre of “wanted” – was installed on April 15, 1964 and soon raised objections at the highest level. #Repost nyclgbtsites with get_repost ・・・ Pioneering pop artist Andy Warhol died on February 22, 1987. During the most creative period of his career, he lived (from 1960 to 1972) at 1342 Lexington Avenue.⠀ -⠀ Warhol’s mother moved into an apartment on the ground floor and he occupied the rest of the house. New York's Crystal Palace from the 1854 Odd Fellows' Offering. Located in present-day Bryant Park, this "crystal palace" was not long for this world. For just a few years it was the tallest structure in New York City after it was built in 1853 until it burned down in 1856 (or so sayeth Wikipedia). ... #crystalpalace #bryantpark #nychistory #NYC #newyork #newyorkcity #oddfellows #dome #americanflag #nycparks #throwbackthursday #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #antiquarian #oldbooks #librariesofinstagram

1920 - Charles M Schwab Mansion, 74th St and Riverside Drive. Schwab was president of U.S. Steel (founded by Andrew Carnegie) and also founded Bethlehem Steel Company. He built a 75-room mansion in a French chateau style in 1906. . Schwab was also the first to acquire an entire block in Manhattan, according to The New York Times. The 50,000 square foot abode came replete with a pool, a bowling alley, a gaym and three elevators. As late as 1930, Schwab still staffed the mansion with 20 servants, mostly English-born. Schwab ended up going bankrupt, and according to this personal story, a Boticelli was smuggled out of the mansion and sold, which kept Schwab going financially for the remainder of his life. . By 1947 the house was empty and in 1948 it was replaced by a large, red-brick apartment complex, called the "Schwab House." #thenandnow

As many of you know, I've been working on a thesis about Barren Island, aka Dead Horse Bay, in Brooklyn. It's where NYC's garbage and dead animals were processed from the 1850s to the 1930s. There was a public school there, and its revered principal from 1918-36 was Jane Shaw. Today I paid my respects at her grave in Utica, where she was from. #nychistory #utica #barrenisland #deadhorsebay #foresthillscemetery

After 5 years of writing and rewriting (in crazy bursts), the anthology I contributed to is finally published & just arrived in my mailbox!!! Luckily it didn’t go into printing before I was able to add a postscript about the #cabaretlaw’s repeal. Big thanks to floridapress and my awesome editor, Sally Sommer, with whom working was such a pleasure I hope we get to repeat again soon. So, I guess I am now officially a #publishedauthor, #whatnext? #letnycdance #freedom2dance #legalizedanceinnyc #dancecrimes #americandance #undergrounddance #danceculture #dancehistory #nychistory #americanhistory #civilrights #footloose #freedomofexpression #livelovedance
