Reading about it is one thing but to see it...one of my favourite moments from New Zealand (reminiscing in a bid to distract myself from how boring it is being back at home): me comparing myself to the proportions of one of my favourite prehistoric creatures- Haast's eagle, the biggest raptor the world has ever known and the predator once at the top of New Zealand's food chain (between the extinction of the dinosaurs 65mya and the arrival of humans to New Zealand around 1280AD, there were no mammalian or reptilian carnivores to fill the niche of apex predator, and birds evolved in New Zealand to fill a lot of the roles occupied by other animals in other parts of the world). With a wingspan 3 metres across, talons 4 inches long (the same as tiger claws), able to reach speeds of up to 50mph on the attack and hitting its prey with the same force as a concrete block dropped from the top of an 8 storey building, Haast's eagle was specifically adapted to kill bipedal prey much larger than itself (its chief prey item was the moa, an extinct species of flightless bird 15 times its weight). It is also believed Haast's eagle may have attacked and killed early humans (it is believed that Poukai, a mythical man-eating bird in Maori legend, was inspired by eagle attacks on early Maori settlers). Haast's eagle died out around 1400AD, a result of early humans in New Zealand hunting its main prey, the moa, to extinction and the destruction of its habitat. #haastseagle #newzealand #newzealandwildlife #newzealandhistory #prehistory #queenstown #bird #birdofprey #extinctanimals #sizecomparison #holiday #favouritemonster #naturalhistory #raptor #poukai

Wellington certainly delivered 🙌🏼 The Te Papa Museum had an incredible display of Māori art and historical exhibits. Not unlike Canada, New Zealand has a troubled past of broken treaties and misappropriation of Indigenous land. Since then, NZ has undertaken a number of initiatives for recognition and restitution to mend the relationship with Māori people. As Canadians, we have a lot to aspire to.

*** Once upon a time there was an island located so far away that birds would live freely in its wild forests. There were no mammals, except three species of bats. When the first humans arrived only 1000 years ago, they didn't know they had discovered one of the most special and remarquable botanical region. Although forests of New Zealand have sustained centuries of destruction, there's no doubt that the flora and fauna of this island is unique. #newzealand #newzealandtravel #newzealandhistory #plantsnz #flora #booklovers #keepitwild

On this day in 1863, HMS Orpheus, part of the Australian squadron, sunk off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand. 189 out of the 259 crew on board were killed, making it New Zealand’s worst ever maritime disaster. #sealogicalhistory #maritimehistory #newzealandhistory #newzealandyachting #yachting
