Saint of the day.. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton!! Elizabeth was an educated woman born right after the American Revolutionary War. After her beloved husband’s death in Italy, she converted to Catholicism and founded a school. She became a nun, called mother Seton and devoted her life to god. Even after being diagnosed with TB she taught at the school for 16 years before her death on January 4th, her feast day. St. Elizabeth is the patron saint of schools and is so inspiring to many of today’s teachers because of her dedication to her teaching life. Not even Tuberculosis could get in the way of this nun teaching the Good News!! #saints #god #elizabeth #motherseton #dailysaint #inspire #imspiration #amazing #strongwomen #teacherlife #tb #tough

Pioneer with Love Reflection for January 4, 2018 via thepassionists St. Elizabeth Ann Seton lived during the early years of the American republic and became a pioneer and a foundress of the young American Catholic Church. Today the Church honors Mother Seton, who is the first native-born North American saint. Mother Seton was led step by step. Born into an Episcopalian family in1774, she was blessed with her own family of a loving husband and five children. Years later when his health failed, they sailed for the warm climate of Italy. It was there that he died. The young widow found a home with a devoted Catholic family, who were associates of her deceased husband. “The patience of this family”, she wrote in her journal. “You would think it was our Savior himself they received”. As she experienced the faith of this family and the practices of the people, especially their devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, Elizabeth was drawn to the Catholic Church. In 1805, she became a Catholic. The power of good example. As Elizabeth cared for her own children, at the same time she also reached out to other children. With the encouragement of other pioneer Catholic leaders, like Archbishop Carroll of Baltimore, Elizabeth opened the first American Catholic School in Baltimore in 1808.  Mother Seton has been called the foundress of the Catholic school system in the United States.

Today is the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton! Mother Seton was a young widow who became a Catholic after the example of friends who helped her after her husband died. She founded schools and orphanages here in the United States. Fun fact: Mother Seton’s nephew, James Roosevelt Bayley, became the first bishop of Newark, NJ- our diocese! - and he named Seton Hall University after his aunt. Mother Seton is the first American-born person to be declared a saint. Let’s pray: “O God, who crowned with the gift of true faith Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s burning zeal to find you, grant by her intercession and example that we may always seek you with diligent love and find you in daily service with sincere faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.” Prayer is from the Collect of the Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Photo is of a statue of Mother Seton at Seton Hall University. It portrays her walking into the wind, personifying the SHU motto: Hazard Zet Forward (Advance through Adversity). #MotherSeton #catholic #Feasts #TheHall
