Day 11, and a bit of a heartfelt one from me so apologies for that. This is Charles. He is a turkey that my sister rescued from a turkey farm where otherwise he would have become Christmas dinner. I don't know about you but I always thought turkeys were a little strange and scary but after this weekend I have realised just how misunderstood, beautiful and tame these creatures really are. (And they give the best hugs) A lot of people don't put a lot of thought in to what they will eat this Christmas (or where it will come from) but please, this year just take a moment to think about all the beautiful turkeys who weren't quite as lucky as Charles this year and gave up their lives so you could have dinner on your table. I'm sorry for the preach, but this is something I feel passionately about. Swipe for real life Charles and his girlfriend Victoria

African masked Weaver . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . These small little yellow birds are quite fascinating. They spend their days building a nest for their mate only for her to come tear it down to pieces if she does not approve of it.

>>>>>• Prairie in Motion •<<<<< Part 1~ The Heron and the Drone. Didn’t expect to see much activity on the prairie today, but there was much astir. Surveying the backwaters, I suddenly saw something flying down the waterway at a distance. I was excited because whatever it was, it had a bright red eye...., but wait, that “eye” was unnaturally bright and it was flying at too smooth and steady a speed to be a living organism. Then I realized it was a small drone, flying directly down the waterway close to the water’s surface. I couldn’t see anyone around who was operating it. Just after it passed, a Great Blue Heron flew gracefully in, maneuvering its wide wingspan to glide to a perfect landing at water’s edge. As it settled in to begin its search for fish, the drone went over again. A large group of geese, further down, all lifted their heads suddenly, in alert stance scanning the sky nervously, and the Heron also took note... 1st-3rd photos~ The Heron takes note of the unfamiliar noise, and then searches for a possible source. Notice that it’s dark crown feathers are raised in alarm. In the third photo, it’s fishing having been interrupted, it is getting ready to take flight...this is not a safe place to feed. In this case, danger is perceived through sound, without an additional visual cue. 4th-6th photos~ The Great Blue Heron takes flight to find a safer spot. Such grace in flight. Look at its enormous wing span. 7th-10th photos~ Once in flight, it maneuvers a slow, wide turn and heads back in the direction it came from, first flying along the edge of a wooded area, then gliding down over the tall grasses and disappearing from view. So silent, whatever panic that it might have known concealed within. #greatblueheron #heron # bird #birdsofinstaqram #birdphotography #ilovebirds #nature #naturesbeauty #prairie #forestpreserve #drone #walkingwithmydog #lateafternoonwalk #dronesarenottheanswer #donotdisturbthepeace #safeplace
