This week's podcast guest's family came to Memphis from Poland to find a better life and likely to escape persecution. They started a store and an auto parts shop in 2929. 🚙 On the other side of the family, they arrived from German in the late 1800s. That side of the family actually started the Jewish newspaper and print shop. 🗞 It was located at a pretty well-known location right next to the Rendezvous. That building, unfortunately, is no longer standing.⠀ .⠀ 🎧 Learn all about Hanukkah and Jewish history in Memphis this week on the podcast at the link in our bio memphistypehistory, or on iTunes, Stitcher, and wherever podcasts are served. ✨⠀

"Nikola Salos threatening Ivan and offering him raw meat", a 17th-century depiction by Ryabushkin. #BlessedNicholas #IvanTheTerrible ______ In February 1570, after a devastating campaign against Novgorod, Ivan the Terrible moved against city of Pskov, once again suspecting the inhabitants of treason. Upon his arrival, all the inhabitants of Pskov came out upon the streets, and each family knelt at the gate of their house, bearing bread & salt to the meet the Tsar. On one of the streets, a holy fool named Nicholas Salos ran toward the Tsar, and cried out: “Ivanushko, Ivanushko, eat our bread & salt, and not Christian blood.” ___ Although he had forbidden his men to kill, Ivan still intended to sack the city. When Ivan attended a prayer at the Trinity cathedral, he expressed his wish to receive Nicholas' blessings. On the contrary, Nicholas reprimanded the Tsar and asked him not to plunder the holy churches of God anymore. Ivan did not heed him and even gave orders to remove the bell from the Trinity cathedral after that. Then, as Nicholas prophesied, the Tsar’s finest horse fell dead. __ Afterwards, Nicholas invited the Tsar to visit his cell under the bell tower. When the Tsar arrived at the cell, the holy fool offered the Tsar a piece of raw meat. “I am a Christian and do not eat meat during Lent”, said Ivan to him. “But you drink human blood,” the saint replied. __ Frightened by the fulfillment of Nicholas' prophecy and denounced for his wicked deeds, Ivan immediately ordered a stop to the looting and fled from the city. #PartEight

On this day in 1944, big band leader Glenn Miller disappears over the English Channel. His plane was never found. Miller was a much-loved and successful musician of the era. He had a string of big hits, such as “Moonlight Serenade” and “In the Mood.” He had a lot to lose, but he put everything on the line for his country. Miller was in his late 30s when #WWII began. He didn’t have to volunteer, but he tried to sign up for the #Navy. When the Navy rejected him, he tried the #Army. He ultimately persuaded the Army to take him so he could “put a little more spring into the feet of our marching men and a little more joy in their hearts.” In the army, he used his talent and fame to boost morale. Miller put together his Army #AirForce Band, which traveled and performed for the troops. In December 1944, Miller was in England, planning for a #Christmas concert in Paris. He’d arranged to hitch a ride on a small plane. When Miller’s plane took off, the weather was less than stellar. No one knows exactly what happened next. Miller never arrived in Paris, but his disappearance wasn’t noticed for 72 hours. The delay hindered the investigation. Rumors took root and grew. Was he assassinated? Was he the victim of friendly fire? The truth is probably much more simple. In all likelihood, Miller’s disappearance can be attributed to simple mechanical failure. Miller was on a plane that was known to have problems with its carburetor heater. The plane most likely crashed into the ocean, killing its passengers quickly. Miller was a man who could have stayed safely at home in #America. Instead he risked—and lost—everything. Amazing fact: Operation Wandering Soul took place during the Vietnam War,it was a propaganda campaign exercised by U.S. Forces during the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese belief is that the dead must be buried in their homeland, or their soul will wander the earth aimlessly in pain and suffering. Vietnamese feel that if a person is improperly buried, then their soul wanders constantly. Engineers of the U.S military recording eerie sounds and altered voices – which pretended to be killed Vietcong for use in the operation, with the intended purpose to cause retreats and the lowering of enemy morale. There is not much info on if the operation had records of success. #history #war #warhistory #warphotography #military #militaryhistory #army #historychannel #historygeek #historybuff #historian #historiansunion #combat #vietnam #vietnamwar #usarmy #usmilitary #retro #classic #vintage #photography #instagood #facts #dailyfacts #battle
