Colonel Robert McCormick, who owned the Chicago Tribune, was a fascinating but unpleasant individual. He dreamed up the sensational contest to build ‘a cathedral for journalism’. He inherited his fortune and was described as "the greatest mind of the fourteenth century" and as a "fascist-minded multi-millionaire”, a “pompous, paunchy, didactic individual with a… superlative ego." His far-right-wing isolationist and racist politics reached their tentacles deep into the newspaper (although curiously, these lobby walls hold quotations from Benjamin Franklin, Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson etc., exalting freedom of the press). McCormick’s characterizations of his accomplishments were grandiose. In June 1947, he gave a 100-year birthday party for the Tribune that included a fireworks show he called "the most colossal show since the Chicago fire." Everything about the celebration was called "the world's greatest". (Does this sound like anyone we know? The difference is that McCormick was a lawyer and savvy businessman, and served in the military, hence ‘Colonel’.) Scandal: In 1914, McCormick was named in the divorce proceedings of Hugh Adams, alleging that McCormick had “wickedly and maliciously debauched and carnally knew” his wife Amy while McCormick was a guest in their home, and further, presented McCormick for a bill for eight years of lodging! After a nasty public battle, the divorce was granted and McCormick and Amy were married. McCormick (dubbed McCosmic for some of his loopy ideas) had secret doors and passageways built leading to the crown of the building - ‘in case the building was ever stormed’. 🤨 (Thanks to Wikipedia and the Chicago Architecture Foundation.)
