The broken bread and the wine speak to the center of our faith. The bread and wine are not merely a pretty, moving religious ceremony. They show us the message we proclaim. They point to the bridge thrown across the chasm that separates men and women from God. #calvaryphx #holyweek #passionweek #lovetriumphs #jesuslastdays #jesus #lastsupper #easter #easter2017

Walking in sandals on the filthy roads of Israel in the first century made it imperative that feet be washed before a communal meal, especially since people reclined at a low table and feet were very much in view. When Jesus rose from the table and began to wash the feet of the disciples, He was doing the work of the lowliest of servants. The disciples must have been stunned at this act of humility from their Master and Teacher..When Jesus came to earth the first time, He came not as King and Conqueror, but as the suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. As He revealed in Matthew 20:28, He came “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” The humility expressed by His act with towel and basin foreshadowed His ultimate act of humility and love on the cross..... #calvaryphx #holyweek #passionweek #lovetriumphs #jesuslastdays #jesus #servant #jesuswashingdisciplesfeet

In Jesus’ final hours alone with His disciples, He took them to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Rather than praying with them, He left them alone with instructions to pray three times that they themselves, would not fall into the temptation to resist the will of God. Unable to keep their eyes open, they would eventually fall asleep instead of doing what Jesus had asked. ..Upon giving them the instructions, Jesus slightly separated himself from the group and fell to the ground “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” Jesus, unraveled by storms, death or disease, was now visibly ‘sorrowful and troubled’. The extremity of this spiritual struggle was something the disciples couldn’t possibly understand, as Jesus was experiencing a unique, unparalleled, suffering of a sinless God in human form. Only He could fathom the depths of God’s righteousness, man’s sin, and the measure of divine wrath with which these required. ..Knowing the cross was inevitable, Jesus prayed for God to take away His suffering, asking for His people’s salvation by another means. He prayed knowing His prayers would not deliver Him from it, but rather through it. And He did so alone, without even the closest of His followers.... #calvaryphx #holyweek #passionweek #lovetriumphs #jesuslastdays #jesus #easter #easter2017 #gardenofgethsemane

Jesus is merciful and gracious to those who trust and obey Him, and He is the One who will judge those who resist and reject Him. The temple was intended to share God’s Word and provide a place for others to worship and find solace in the Lord. When the clergymen chose the temple as a place to do business, they took away the focus from God and made it about their fleshly desires of greed and profiteering. .Now the Jewish feast of Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple courts people selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables. So he made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold the doves he said, “Take these things away from here! Do not make my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Passion for your house will devour me.”.Jesus revealed himself to Israel as her Messiah by His cleansing of the temple. The ‘Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,” was showing His people their sin and urging them to repent. His judgement was not upon what they were doing, but rather where they were doing it. Why, if the church is not a building, was ‘the where’ so important to Him? Ponder this question, as we leave you with this passage from 1 Corinthians....Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”... #calvaryphx #cleansingofthetemple #easter #holyweek #passionweek #lovetriumphs
