Have no clue what everything is. Some I do. But this a small collection of what we brought back and what catches our eye. If you recognize any of it please comment. #rockhound #amateur #quartz #silver #pyrite #calciumcarbonate #sparkle

The grasslands surrounding Mono Lake. I didn’t take the time to identify what the red foliage is and mildly regret it now. It does creat quite dramatic landscape however. #monolake #monolakecalifornia #californiadesert #desert #california #redfoliage #grasslands #tufa #monolaketufa #calciumcarbonate #rocks #grassland

Limestone corrosion - limestone is a sedimentary rock, largely composed of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate). Millions of shelled creatures die in the seas and their bodies fall to the ocean floor. Calcium carbonate is the largest component of the shells of sea creatures. The soft parts are eaten or rot away and the shells remain. The shells are then compressed into the hard mass that we call limestone. Limestone is susceptible to the erosion type corrosion. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is dissolved into water turning it into a weak carbonic acid. Some resistant rocks like limestone are vulnerable to this acidic water and will dissolve into it. The rate at which it erodes is dependent on the concentration of carbonates and other minerals in the water. The more carbon dioxide there is in the atmosphere, the more acidic the oceans will become and the faster limestone cliffs will erode. This photograph is proof that even the resistant 'hard rock' headlands at Caswell bay are retreating albeit slower than the erosion that attacks the less resistant 'soft' rocks of the inlets and bays #limestone #geology #ratesoferosion #corrosion #erosion #headlands #retreatingcoastline #globalwarming #carbondioxide #atmosphere #calciumcarbonate #geography #geographygcse #kq121gcse #wjec #wjecgeography #geographygce #kq114gce #kq115gce #kq1110gce #thegeographyteacher #geographylens #wales #gower #caswellbay
