So many messages to me start with “how much is a birthday cake?” Which is usually responded with a list of questions to extract more information! So here are some tips that might help you order the correct size for your money and if you don’t want to be left with tonnes of cake after the event! 1- How many guests? If you are catering a small party it’s more likely most people will have a slice, whereas a large wedding you may find it’s less likely everyone will take a slice. Unless you wanted to make sure every guest takes home a slice (in children’s party bags/wedding favours etc) they you can often just choose a slightly smaller cake that will be just right. 2- Cutting- This is the biggest factor to getting the most for your money. As seen in the second picture, the best way to slice your cake is to cut strips of cake then cut even square pieces. Lots will say this isn’t a very big slice-but your not technically feeding your guests a meal with it, it’s a gesture or a token (bonus treat!) if you are serving it as a dessert you can always opt for slightly bigger meaning you can cut larger slices. (Remember a little cake goes a long way And even though you may think cutting into square portions may be small, once you factor in your frosting, jam, ganache and icing, it does get quite filling.) 3- Tiers- start with the smallest, this always makes the cake look taller too. If your looking for a cake that is grand but not too expensive, or lots left that end up going to waste-start small and add tiers to the bottom. It will look slim and tall as apposed to larger tiers that look wider and lower to the table. This is only a rough idea of things to factor in and help you when choosing your cake . A lot of my customers have an idea and will just go with what they want it to look like -which is perfect! But this is just incase people are unsure and only want to pay for the amount of cake they need!
