Remembering #GeetaDutt on her 87th birth anniversary. Geeta Dutt (born Geetā Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri; 23 November 1930 – 20 July 1972) was a prominent Indian singer, born in Faridpur before the Partition of India. She found particular prominence as a playback singer in Hindi cinema. She also sang many modern Bengali songs, both in film and non-film genre. K. Hanuman Prasad took Geeta under his patronage, trained and groomed her in singing and later launched her into singing for movies. In 1946, she got the first break with an opportunity to sing in the mythological film Bhakta Prahlad for which Prasad was the music director. She was given only two lines to sing for two songs. In 1947, she got her break with Do Bhai. The music of Do Bhai became a hit with "Mera sundar sapna beet gaya" topping the charts. Geeta Roy's fresh and melodious voice combined vivacity and pathos in such a way that, despite a pronounced "Bengali lilt," the song touched the pulse of thousands of music lovers. She was popularly nick-named "Bangal ka jadu" (the magic from Bengal). In the same film she sang the evocative "Yaad karoge, yaad karoge, ik din humko yaad karoge." It was remarkable for a teenager to sing with such maturity. In the same year, she sang for Hunuman Prasad's other releases. "Naino Ki Pyali Se Hoto Ki Madira" (Rasili) "Neha Lagake Mukh Mod Gayaa" (Rasili) "Aaja ri Nindiya Aaja": a lullaby alongside the established playback singer Parul Ghosh (Nai Maa) The uncanny ability of Geeta Dutt that made her race past her contemporaries was her unique versatility to sing any kind of song with the authentic tone, feeling, passion and emotion as demanded by the composition and the situation it was being picturised in. From a bhajan to a club song, from a haunting melancholic song to a peppy romantic number, she could traverse the range of music, seemingly effortlessly. bollywoodirectA man ahead of his time, #GuruDutt is among the few artists who have made a mark in the history of Indian cinema. An actor, director, and producer, this man was perhaps the most brilliant package of talent we ever had. Born as Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone and popularly known as Guru Dutt, the renowned film director made his mark in cinema with classics such as Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. The first two of the movies are counted among the greatest films of all time and Dutt himself is remembered as one of the greatest auteurs. Dutt's movies have acquired a cult following and influenced whole generations of Indian filmmakers and audiences. Contrary to a general belief about the viability of his film projects, Dutt more or less produced commercially successful films. Over the years the commercial nature of his projects saw a trade-off with his creative aspirations. Movies like C.I.D., Baazi, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam were the first of their kind in Hindi cinema. The only movie produced by Dutt that was considered a box office disaster was Kaagaz Ke Phool, which is now a cult classic. He lost over Rs.1.7 million producing that film, a large amount by the standards of that time, which was more than recovered by his next project, Chaudhvin Ka Chand. He never lost faith in his team or in the distributors of his films. Once a project was over, he would begin a new - with little concern about the commercial success of the previous project. He was part of an exclusive school of Indian film directors, including the likes of Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan and Bimal Roy, who were able to achieve a healthy blend of artistic and commercial success between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. Gripped by depression Dutt committed suicide at 39, leaving behind not only a rich legacy of popular classics such as Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam but also a handful of unfinished films, including Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi which was ultimately released with Dharmendra as his replacement. . . . . . . . . #bollywood #bollywoodirect

Born Erin Issac Daniel to an Irish mother and an Indian Christian father in Lahore, the actress was given the name #Manorama after she played a character by that name in the 1941 film, Khazanchi. Manorama’s best though would come much later when she switched to playing character roles. She often played a tyrannical aunt or mother with a frown for a face and an angry rant up her sleeve. The woman with exaggerated eyelashes and expressions, was popularly known for roles like the comical tyrant aunt in 'Seeta Aur Geeta', 'Ek Phool Do Maali', 'Do Kaliyan' and 'Caravan'. Some of her other memorable films include Half Ticket, Dus Lakh, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Sharda, Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong, Mujhe Jeene Do, Mehboob ki Menhdi, Bombay to Goa and Lawaaris. Taxi Driver (1954) "The urban cartography of Taxi Driver allowed the characters and narrative events the chance to inhabit space inventively. The freedom to move, to travel, to access the city and its myriad little stories provided a cosmopolitan vision to the film because it empowered the city’s underclass with the right to occupy a plurality of spaces. The nightclub is not an inaccessible space for the underclass in Taxi Driver but a place that they negotiate on a daily basis. The nightclub attracts all kinds of people who peddle their crimes, dreams and weaknesses. What makes Taxi Driver interesting is that specific devices are used to adventurously gaze at the city. This gaze is kinetic and pedestrian, a combination that richly brings out the landscape of Bombay. The lives of street characters, migrants, crooks and dancers are placed within this mise en scene as ordinary worlds, a fluid female subjectivity and desire are allowed to float. The women in the film are adventurous and their mobility marks them as different. The absence of familial space is remarkable. While Awara and Sri 420 are both films with working women – in the former she is in a powerful position due to lineage; in Sri 420, she is the voice of redemption, in a morally superior role as a school teacher. Taxi Driver’s desire to keep out all notions of tradition and Indianness made it significant for its time.
