Carefree black youth de Havana ✨

Los jóvenes de Cuba Cuba is no utopía although it may appear that way for tourist. Nonetheless one thing that continues to bring me joy after two years of working in Havana are the children. Most are still free to stimulate their creative minds without video games and cell phones. Instead they spend their days playing outside with friends. I love people watching and writing about human interactions. I sat and watched these three boys outside of the famous hotel Saratoga where celebrities like Beyoncé and Usher stayed humbly take off their school uniforms and jump into the fountain to cool down. Simple pleasures. Who needs Six Flags when the youthful mind has the capacity to create one ✨

Keven Stonewall, scientist, now 22 years old has been featured on BET, USA, Today, New York Daily News, MTV and more for his amazing advancements in Colon Cancer! At just age 17 he got an internship at Rush University where he worked on a potential vaccine. We look forward to seeing this young black man graduate and find that cure!

No school today so you know what that means... quality time with mini me 😍😍😍 Blessed that I didn't have to find someone to cover my shift, beg or pay a family member to watch her or use hard earned PTO time because there's no school. Running your own business doesn't just give you freedom it gives you something you'll cherish FOREVER. Precious time with the ones you love ❤

This #blackhistorymonth, we will be talking to our students about who they are, who’s come before them, and the people who have inspired them along the way. . From Charles, Grade 8 | When I say I Am Somebody, it makes me feel like I’m more important. And what it means to me is that there’s nothing wrong with me. Nothing wrong with being yourself. My friends would say I’m good at making people laugh. By being outgoing. Trying to cheer them up all the time. Ms. Henry’s exact words about me would be: “Charles is an outgoing, charming, perfect, little boy.” . When I think about Black History Month, I think about our Core Values of Care, Inclusivity, and Justice. Care and the love to be free, finally. Inclusivity - being able to do things alongside of white folks. And Justice because we finally are able to do more things. . Mr. Williams would be one of my top black role models. Because he wants to bring history together. He wants to mash it up. White history with black history. He wants to just make sure that black children learn about what they really have to do in the world to succeed. . And I look up to my Aunt. She’s really nice, but she’s on me and Leanna about doing our work, especially in history. Because we don’t learn a lot about black history. So when we do learn about it from time to time, she gets really excited. And she just likes to help us with anything about black history. . And we go deep into ancestry. Like how people were raised on a farm. She told us a lot about my great grandma, Frances, who worked on a plantation for most of her life. Her father was white but her mother was black. So she had worked in the kitchen all her life. So that’s where our family comes from - mostly cooking and cleaning. I feel excited when I learn stuff about my family. It just brings me joy.

This #blackhistorymonth, we will be talking to our students about who they are, who they aspire to be, and who has inspired them along the way. . From Daaron, Grade 8 | I look up to my Grandma. She’s just a good person. Period. My relationship with her is good. I can talk to her when I want to. If she was to pick me up on a Saturday or a Sunday, we would just ride around. And then probably get something to eat. And just ride around and talk. And that would be the day. She would probably have a lot more to say about me than I say about myself. She knows me a lot better than I know myself. I don’t know how. But she would say pretty much the same thing. She would say I’m a fun person to be around. Silly. Smart. She’d probably have a little more to add on. I think she’s proud of me. . For me, I don’t necessarily want to be famous in black history. I just want to be remembered. Even if it was just making a change. You don’t necessarily need to be in the history books. I want them to say that he was good. At whatever I do. Or whatever I did. That I was a good person. Period. And to make sure that everybody likes me.

This #blackhistorymonth, we hope you will join us in celebrating our students, in all of the somebodiness and black excellence that they embody. . From Carlicia, Grade 8 | If my friends could describe me, they would say I’m caring. Because if I see somebody down, or if I see something is wrong with somebody, I would try to talk to them. And see where they’re coming from. Because if I was down, I would want somebody to check on me. My family would describe me as energetic. Because I’m one of the type of people who doesn’t just want to sit around all day and do nothing. Or do one thing. I’m the type of person who wants to go out and do stuff and enjoy life. I enjoy trying new things. Like new foods. I enjoy going to new places. I enjoy making new friends. I Am Somebody means that I am SOMEBODY. And that my life is valuable. That I matter.
