Hermes was a proposed spaceplane which would have given Europe an independent manned space capability. —————————————————————————— It began as a French project as early as 1975, eventually expanding to an ESA-wide effort in November 1987, as development costs increased. Back then, ESA had no rockets powerful enough to launch its Hermes spaceplane : as a result, work on the Ariane 5 rocket began. The contractors of Hermes were Aérospatiale (now part of Airbus) and Dassault. —————————————————————————— Hermes was designed to take as much as five astronauts to low Earth orbit on missions of 30 to 90 days in space, aswell as payloads in its payload bay, similarly to NASA’s Space Shuttle. Following a mission, Hermes was intended to land at the Istres Air Force base (which also happened to be a backup landing site for the Space Shuttle). Following the Challenger disaster, Hermes underwent heavy modifications : its cost rose, leading to its cancellation in 1992.

"We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win ..." Hi! Please, if you have the time, check out this new TV show centred around the future of technology called 'Tomorrow's World Today'. It's airing on the Science Channel May 5th. I'm honoured that I have been given the opportunity to help spread the word! I'm defo hyped for this (Dont worry I'm not making a penny from this promotion, it just genuinely seems like a great show.) The Ariane 5 is a European carrier rocket from the Ariane series, which was developed on behalf of the ESA and since 1996 in use. It is the most powerful European launcher and makes it possible to transport heavy payloads into Earth orbit. #beinnovative #esa #ariane5 #ariane #rocked #space #powerful #european
