Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) “River Rouge Plant” 1932 Oil and pencil on canvas 20 3/8 × 24 5/16 in. (51.8 × 61.8 cm) Whitney Museum of American Art New York . In 1927, an advertising agency hired Charles Sheeler to photograph the Ford Motor Company’s new River Rouge plant, a vast complex ten miles outside Detroit, Michigan. Covering 2,000 acres and employing 75,000 people, River Rouge was the world’s largest factory and the first to fully manufacture cars on site. After finishing the photography assignment, Sheeler produced a series of paintings of the factory complex, including “River Rouge Plant.” Here, Sheeler depicted the plant’s coal processing and storage facility, set on the serene waters of a boat slip, using the crisp lines and hard-edge geometries of Precisionism. Although the plant had experienced severe labor disputes in the early years of the Depression, Sheeler repressed the human dimension of manufacturing work and focused instead on the factory as a paradigm of modern rationality and order. For Sheeler, American factories were the contemporary equivalent of the cathedral, “our substitute,” he said, “for religious experience.” (Object label) . #charlesscheeler #americanart #modernism #precisicionism #americanfactory #americancathedral #americanlabor #riverrougeplant #1930s whitneymuseum

Elsie Driggs (1895-1992) “Pittsburgh” 1927 Oil on canvas 34 1/4 × 40 1/4 in. (87 × 102.2 cm) Whitney Museum of American Art New York . “Pittsburgh” was inspired by a view from a train window that Elsie Driggs saw as a child, riding past the city’s steel mills at night. Years later, remembering how the spewing smokestacks tinted the nocturnal sky with sulfurous hues, she returned to Pittsburgh to make studies for a painting. She discovered, however, that the production of steel had changed over the years and the mill was using a new process that no longer discharged smoke into the sky. She sketched the buildings anyway and returned to her studio to paint “Pittsburgh” with a palette of greys. Driggs exhibited the painting in New York, where her gallery declared it an exemplar of a “new classicism,” and she herself “Pittsburgh” her "Piero della Francesca" in honor of the fifteenth-century painter, who inspired her with his "desire for structure and order, simplicity and strength." “Pittsburgh” may be a devotional image for a twentieth-century faith, but the monolithic gray smokestacks rising above the haze seem inescapably dark and menacing, suggesting that Driggs may have been questioning America’s newfound faith in technology. Another fave from the #winterantiquesshow: a truly strange French vision of the Surrender at Yorktown from theoldprintshop. Not unlike the Van Blarenberghe gouache from Versailles that will be reproduced our upcoming exhibition “Vantage Points: History and Politics in the American Landscape” alongside a monumental 2013 graphite drawing by kenseth.armstead, ‘Surrender Yorktown 1781’ that responds to it. • • • #landscape #exhibition #museum #americanart #newarkmuseum #revolutionarywar

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) “My Egypt” 1927 Oil, fabricated chalk, and graphite pencil on composition board 35 15/16 × 30 in. (91.3 × 76.2 cm) Whitney Museum of American Art New York . “My Egypt” depicts a steel and concrete grain elevator belonging to John W. Eshelman & Sons in Charles Demuth’s hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Painted from a low vantage point, the structure assumes a monumentality emphasized by the inclusion of the lower rooftops of neighboring buildings (suggesting the more traditional architecture of smaller family farms) at the bottom of the painting. In Demuth’s image, the majestic grain elevator rises up as the pinnacle of American achievement—a modern day equivalent to the monuments of ancient Egypt. A series of intersecting diagonal planes add geometric dynamism add a heavenly radiance to the composition, invoking the correlations between industry and religion that were widespread in the 1920s. Nonetheless, Demuth may have intended the title to allude to the slave labor that built the pyramids, intimating the dehumanizing effect of industry on the nation’s workers. Moreover, the pyramids and their association with life after death might also have appealed to the ailing artist, who was bedridden with diabetes at the time of the painting’s execution.
