MECCA Building, formerly the Gary Theater (J.J. Verplank, 1913). The Marx Brothers performed The Cinderella Girls here. In 1965, it was renovated to its current design. Unforgettable weekend at the Gary-Chester Exchange. To meet and witness a handful of #ChesterMade artists acquiring property and revitalizing downtown was truly inspirational. Many thanks to Illinois Humanities and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council for sponsoring the event, and thanks to the amazing people of Chester who fed us and taught us so much about how to reuse space and keep wealth in the community. If you're ever in the Philadelphia area, check out Chester! theartistwarehouse chestermade . . . . #TheMiracleCity #garyindiana #garyin #tristate #chesterpa #rustbelt #artiseverywhere #artinthestreets #reclaim #salvage #deserve2preserve #savingplaces #preservation #knightcities #seemycity #great_captures_city #savingsacredspaces #curbed #pennsylvania #explorepa #visitpa #pennsylvaniaisbeautiful #pennlive

#Repost preservegary: On November 7, 1967, Richard Gordon Hatcher was elected mayor of Gary. Hatcher, along with Carl Stokes of Cleveland, was the first African-American mayor elected in a major US city. Hatcher enjoyed a meteoric rise, from a prosecutor in cases of police brutality, to a councilman, where he helped pass open housing legislation in the city. The mayoral election of 1967 was bitter and controversial, to say the least. At the time, Gary's population was evenly split between black and white. After Hatcher won the primary, the Democratic party refused to support him, backing instead the Republican candidate. Newspapers insinuated that he was a Kremlin agent, while the Department of Justice intervened after incidents of voter fraud. Nevertheless, Richard Hatcher won the popular vote by some 2,000 votes. Meanwhile, the exiting administration refused to provide a transition of power, even chaining shut the doors to city hall when Hatcher took office on January 1st. Despite ceaseless pushback and discrimination, Mayor Hatcher curbed police brutality, and hired African Americans to leading roles in City Hall. In his first 12 ears in office, Hatcher secured $300 million dollars of federal funding. To this day, he is the longest serving mayor in the city of Gary. . . . . #TheMiracleCity #GaryIndiana #garyin #ig_chicagoland #blackhistory #civilrights #segregation #sharethefacts #knowthefacts #ushistory #americanhistory #indianahistory #savediverseplaces #1967 #1960s #steelcity #vintagephoto #oldphoto #blackandwhitephoto #rustbelt #grayscale #instahistory
