#OnThisDay in 1776, British General William Howe, just four days after meeting with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge, crossed the East River, and – with the flight of General George Washington and the Continental Army – Howe occupied the city of New York. This British amphibious landing in Manhattan came to be known as the “Landing at Kip’s Bay.” In the depicted diary, events are recorded in real time on September 15, 1776, by Ewald Gustav Shaukirch, pastor of First Moravian Church of New York.“ [Sunday] 15th. Soon in the Morning when the Tide served[,] more Ships passed up both the North and East River, and tho’ what was yet in Town of the Rebel Troops got away as fast as they could, yet they fired again on the Ships as they did likewise from Powles [Paulus] Hook, which caused a canonading which made the Houses shake and the Sound of it was terrible.
