This notebook belonged to an aide of Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson. 150 years ago this evening the legendary General was wounded by friendly fire in front of his lines. He and the Confederacy would never recover. In the words of General Lee, "he has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right". #stonewalljackson #civilwar #battleofchancellorsville #150yearsago

2017-03-09 Short Drive. Chancellorsville VA Battlefield. "We halted in a pasture and broke ranks. Then came the reaction. All moved by the same impulse, we sat down on the wet ground and wept. Not silently, but vociferously and long." (David Holt, 16th Mississippi, after the fighting at the Bloody Angle, May 13, 1864.) #battleofchancellorsville #uscivilwar #confederacy #civilwarbattlefield #fredericksburgva #battlefield

Fernandina Sunrise. Spent the night on Amelia Island, one of the most historically contested places on the East Coast. Originally home to native Timucuans, the island was settled by France, Spain, Britain, Colonial Patriots, The Republic of Florida, Mexican revolutionaries, the Confederacy, and finally the United States. The real question...what ever happened to the Timucuans?........ #hondaventures #ameliaisland #fernandinabeach #florida

During the American Civil War, the Confederate States of America consisted of the governments of 11 Southern states that seceded from the Union in 1860-61, carrying on all the affairs of a separate government and conducting a major war against the United States of America until defeated in the spring of 1865. #battleofchancellorsville #uscivilwar #confederacy #civilwarbattlefield #fredericksburgva #war

Charles Lindbergh testifies before the U.S. Congress, recommending that the United States negotiate a neutrality pact with Germany. Today in WW2 history, Jan. 23, 1941 Pictured: Hermann Göring presents a medal to Lindbergh. Capt. Lindbergh (U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve), was famous for being the 1st aviator to successfully complete a solo flight across the Atlantic ocean in 1927. It earned him the nickname Lone Eagle & the Medal of Honor. But by 1941, FBI head J. Edgar Hoover, with FDR’s blessing, had personally ordered a secret, & illegal FBI investigation to determine if Lindbergh was conducting “subversive activities”… “I am absolutely convinced that Lindbergh is a Nazi.”, said Roosevelt. Lindbergh was living in Europe in the mid-1930s & was asked by the US military attaché in Berlin to assess the Luftwaffe. Lindbergh visited Germany 6 times between 1936 & 38. As Göring’s guest, he received unprecedented access to Luftwaffe facilities & even flew a Ju-88 bomber & Bf-109 fighter. Göring awarded him the Order of the Golden Eagle. Lindbergh’s reports to the U.S. Army were filled with details of the superiority of German aircraft, production capability & esprit. Returning to the US he began to speak out against American involvement in WW2. In 1940 he joined the isolationist America First Committee. In a nationwide radio address on May 18, 1940, ten days after Germany invaded France, Belgium & the Netherlands, Lindbergh accused the Roosevelt administration of creating “a defense hysteria.” He later called the Lend-Lease Bill,”another step away from democracy.” Roosevelt was livid. FDR compared Lindbergh to an Ohio congressman who had opposed Lincoln’s campaign against the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Lindbergh’s anti-Semitic, pro-eugenics comments led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing. After Pearl Harbor FDR blocked his return to duty but he served as civilian consultant to aviation companies & spent 6 mo. in the SW Pacific, participating in 50 combat missions. After WW2 Lindbergh visited Nazi concentration camps & was disgusted & angry. He faded from public view & died on Maui in 1974.
